That was amazing information. I had no idea that Britain would send out brickies etc when there must have been people with the necessary skills locally. I have tried to find a John Crawford on the Census who fits his criteria but failed so he must have been born in Sri Lanka. I feel sure that as both May and Fanny married sgts in the Army he was not the planter. etc. I also know that if he had been in the army they would have been sent back to England by the powers that be.
Fanny was last heard of with her brood in Portsmouth - so I will now try to find out if she lived longer than May and therefore there is still some knowledge within the family. I assume that John and his father would have married in a local church or at least been baptised. Many thanks you have opened up a whole new world to me.
