There is a J. Crawford whose name appears in the directories from 1861 onwards. He is listed as an Engineeer at Mattaccooly which is a suburb north of Colombo. He was employed by Wilson Ritchie Co which ran the Hulftsdorf Mills which produced coconut oil and soap. A party of fitters, joiners, and bricklayers were sent from Engalnd in 1834/35 to set up the mill which had a daily output of 8 to 10 tons of oil. The ownership of the Mills changed several times with Leechman and Freudenberg Cos owning the mills.J. Crawford's name continued to appear in the directories as an Engineeer till 1885 when he may have died. There is of course a well known government officer by the name HL Crawford who rose to be Colonial Secretary in Ceylon, and there is also a James Crawford who was a tea planter. In the General Cemetery in Colombo is a record of the death of Marcus Crawford of the Ceylon Civil Service who was drowned in the sea at Mount Lavinia aged 38 in Sep 1893. Also of Richrd Crawford who died in August 1860 aged 30 years.I am sending this information hoping that it may lead you on to further material.
