CAve & Co was founded by HW cave who came to Ceylon in the 1870s as the Private Secretary to Bishop Copleston. He set up Cave and Co in 1876 mainlt to sell religious books but soon expanded to other fields like selling musical instruments, billiard tables, bicycles etc. Caves was during the initial years at the building at the western corner of Queen Street and Chatham street near the clock tower. That was known as Amen Corner.Somewhere around 1910 Caves moved to Gafoor building on Main Street and has remained there ever since. The building at Amen Corner later was known as the Bogala Building as Bogala Graphite Co ran a motor garage called Bogala Motors which were agents for the Dodge Motor Car. The building also housed the Head Office of Dodwell and Co a leading produce export firm. There was a small petrol service station operating out of the building in the 1950s and 60s and which closed down some years later. The Metropole Hotel was also operating from a part of the building. I looked up the Fergusons Directory for 1898/99 where the Consuls in Ceyloon are listed and W. Morey JP is listed as the American Consul, and EL Morey JP as the Deputy Consul with the office in the Fort but no street address is given.
I have not visited that part of the Fort for the past 10 years and I am not certain whether the building that stood at Amen Corner still stands.
