Niall, there are few options for researching births in British Ceylon, especially out from Colombo and Galle, but being in the military is a great help.
The main question asked will be, was he an officer or a soldier?
The National Archives in Kew has the Royal Garrison Artillery Militia arranged in Alpha order by county or region, and then Alpha by name in WO/96 /1308-1460.
WO/156 also has over 600 registers of MBD army records from all over the world for the period 1808-2004.
There are lists of army marriages, baptisms and deaths online
for free at You will have to sign up, but it is a free search for the overseas Army records.
If you can borrow/buy the National Archives Army research guide, written by William Spencer,ISBN 978 1 905615 10 0 it will give you a better idea where to look.
If you can get to the National Archives better still, as they are so helpful and you can print copies of research records there and then.
Cheers, Larry Andresen
