Dear Robyn
I have mailed a copy of the Ceylankan to you
today. The Armitage family tree was given to
me by John Armitage who is a direct descendant of the John A who established the
company in Ceylon. The latter had 6 sons a and
a daughter by his marriage to Fanny Henriette. On the closure of the company 2 sons migrated to Australia. One was Charles
Cyrus who married Dora Robertson daughter of the Manager of the Mercantile Bank in Colombo.Dora(1858 - 1946) was the first woman to teach shorthand in NSW. She had 3sons and two daughters. One son was Hugh
Traill Armitage who became Governor of the
Reserve Bank of Australia.Another was George
Sydney who had 5 sons. One is John Lindsay
who was a Member of Parliament for 14 years.
It was he who gave me the family tree which
is on a paper one metre by one and half metres in area.It traces the family down from Godfrey A 1670. I am still wondering how to copy it for you! John has a book on the Armitages. I referred Beryl to him, and I
believe he gave her a lot of material. I
have no connection whatever with the Armitages, but know two sub branches of the
family now living in Melbourne, Sydney and
Queensland. You have plenty of take off points
for your research now! Please let me know if
you want details.
