Galle as quiet as'

In Norah Roberts book she mentions my Bowman cousins as having hidden the sugar machinery in the river due to 'prohibition'. In fact, during the management of George Winter's Baddegama Estate,by Haverstock. H Bowman, his son in law, new machinery was installed, the old ones being taken to Pillagoda, where my grandfather Allie Winter continued sugar planting. Sugar prices were Rs 20 per cwt in 1881 but fell to Rs 10 in 1910 so was abandoned
as unprofitable and the rubber boom ensued. George co-founded the Colombo Observer with fellow merchants and was first Editor, followed by the fiery Irishman, Dr Christopher Elliott, whose son was Edward Elliott, AGA of Galle. I do not think his surname was Brooke. A glaring error refers to William Wilberforce, who was NOT a Methodist but attended the Anglican, Holy Trinity, Clapham where the Rev. Venn baptised George. He did encourage the Methodists to go to Ceylon which they did before the Anglican Missionaries who were taken to Galle by George in 1818 and where the Rev. Mayor built Christchurch, Baddegama consecrated by Bishop Heber, who wrote the hymn about Ceylon's beauteous isle, which some took exeption not fully understanding what he meant. The Pettah Methodist Church, which I believe was the first, was designed by our German Schneider ancestor, cartographer for the British. The Rev. Venn founded the Church Missionary Society. Many Lankan schools were founded by this Society one of which I attended, Ladies College, it was a wonderful school. Dr Christopher Elliott owned 'Temple Trees' where our great grandma, mother of Allie Winter, was born as it was previously owned by the Walbeoff family she was related to.
