Charles P Hayley was a well known firm of Company Agents in Galle which my father was well acquainted with as my Bowman cousins married into it(Harrop Hayley).I well remember visiting their stores in the Fort as a girl. It was founded in 1878 by Charles Pickering Hayley who was born on the island of Jersey. He was joined by his son Alec in 1893.Another son.Steuart went to Galle in 1901 and planted tea and rubber in Udugama.Steuart formed a partnership in 1909 with W.W Kenny in Colombo. They exported plumbago found around the area, rubber, and cocoanut products. He was Chairman of the of the Chamber of Commerce and married a daughter of George Lee, then Postmaster General. My grand aunt Annie Winter also married a Lee as did another kinsman which makes me wonder if they were all connected? .Steuart's daughter married C.J Steiger employed by Volkart Bros. This latter Company still exists.
A grandson of the founder, George Hayley, son of F.A Hayley worked in Galle in 1946 and formed a new Co. to acquire the assets of Hayley & Kenny Ltd.After 'Ceylonisation' 83% of the assets had to be held by persons resident in Lanka so the Hayes Jayasundera became the majority shareholder in Galle.Apparently in 1981 the Company was awarded the Presidents Export award for outstanding export performance.
