The family name GUNASINGHE in Sri Lanka belongs to the Sinhalese Community and it is usually spelt with an "E" or an "A" at its end as I have done so above.

The word SINHA means "Lion" in Sinhalese and is derived from it because Sri Lankan Sinhalese Community is considered, according to ancient mythology, to be descendant from the Lion.

Sometimes it is also spelt with a "G" in between the "N" and "H".

There are many other similar Sinhalese Family names that end with this suffix "SINHE" or "SINHA", viz
