Re British India Hotel @ 13 Baillie Street, Colombo 1.
During the war in 1942, my father loaned GB£1000.00
to my uncle John Cyril de Silva Wijeyeratne to purchase
a 99 year lease on this premises. I was immediately after
this transaction in January 1942.
The main object of this 'hotel' or a glorified drinking
establishment was to curry the custom of the British
forces located in Colombo.
To entice the naval officers, my uncle hired a comedian
Eddie Jayamanne, who became one of the most famous local
Charlie Chaplin of Ceylon.
He was on a commission on sales to the forces he brought in.
He would attract the attention of the soldiers by skidding
on a banana skin, make the boys laugh and ask them to buy
him a drink.
British India Hotel was on the side of GPO, a few hundred
yards from the Queen's House.
