Capt. Edward Madge and Pandara's Tree

In the village of Kachchilaimadu in the Mullaitivu Dist. under some tamarind trees stood a stone erected by R.A Festing, Asst. Govt. Agent, 1904-5.It marked the place where Capt. F.W Von Driberg defeated Pandara Vanniya, a Vanniya chief in 1803.The chief who had once been pardoned for rebellion and reinstated by the British Govt.but again revolted and attacked the Govt. house at Mulaittivu on August,25th, 1803 together with the Disava of Nuwarakalawiya and a body of Kandyans. He drove out the garrison under command of Von Driberg who retreated to Jaffna by boat. The insurgents were later driven from Mullaitivu by a detachment sent from Trinco under Capt. Edward Madge of the 19th Regt.Kumarasekera Mudaliyar of Mullaitivu and others wre strongly suspected of treason, captured and executed (Vanni manual pp.18,19)
