I have recently been doing research at the US Patent Office in Arlington, VA. I've posted results at http://users.erols.com/spurlinn/patents.htm.
Lower case letters seem to make a difference now when you enter this address in your browser.
There are more Sperlings than Spurlings; however, look closely at the first names and you will recognize some Sperlings whose names often were written Spurling..
