In Hood River Valley, March 17, 1901 Mrs. W. C. Sproat
The sorrowing relatives and sympathizing neighbors assembled on Tuesday last to pay their last affectionate tribute to Mrs. W. C. Sproat, who died on last Sunday morning, March 17th of congestion of the lungs following an attack of the grip. Her illness was brief and her death came as a sudden blow to her grief stricken husband and children. Deceased was born in Herkimer County, New York nearly 71 years ago, coming west with her parents before the era of railroads and settling in Wisconsin where the state was still a wilderness, later moving to northern Minnesota, enduring the severe cold of that climate for 20 years., and last September settling with her family in the
genial Hood River Valley, finally anticipating a further lease of life in this fruitful vale. She was a home woman in every sense of the word. Her husband and her children ever being apparent in her mind. Self denial, self sacrifice and a rigid fulfillment of her sense of duty and morality were her cardinal principle. She early in life united with the Methodist church and died in the fullness of Christian faith.
(Phebe A. Sproat in buried with her husband, William C. Sproat and her sons Charles H and Boyd Sproat in Idlewilde Cemetery, Hood River, Oregon.)
