Frank,
In the 1850 census, Stephen is listed as Stephen C. Sprout. He is listed as farmer in the town of Gates, Monroe County, New York. It also appears he had hired hands on the farm (several Irish immigrants)... if I count correctly there are 6 young men between ages of 19 & 27.

In 1840, he was in Barton, Tioga County, NY

In 1830, he was in Wallkill, Orange County, NY

I don't have any records prior to 1830. Do you find any correlations? It is amazing to me that a farmer would be moving at least every 10 years in those days.
