Phillip is the greatgrandson of John Thomas Spriggs son of John & Susan. Family lore is that John was born in England and married a Susan West. We have not found a marriage record in nearby counties of Md. or Va. to verify the name West. John (33)b. Va.tinner, and Susan (33)b.Md. can be found on the 1850 census for Berkeley County, Va, Martinsburg (now West Virginia)with children:William, Sarah M., John T., Robert H., Mary V., James and Emily J. In 1860 they are living in Piedmont,Va, Hampshire Co.(now Mineral Co, WV)with children: Robert, Mary V., James L., Emily J, Charles(8) and George. William and John T. are in Parkersburg, Wood County, Va. (now West Va). Sarah?. Robert H. "wounded in Battle of Lynchburg, Va. June 18, 1864 and left in the enemy's hands." Susan must have died before John's 29 Nov. 1868 marriage to Rhoda A. Batson in Clinton, Ohio. They can be found on the 1870 Clinton, Ohio, Washington township census with George L. and Ephram 10months. John died 8 Jan, 1873(Clinton, Ohio courthouse). We have not found John's burial place nor Susan's death info.
Rhoda and Ephram are living in Ephram Batson's household on Ohio 1880 census. Ohio marriages for James L.,Mary V. and Charles found on Familysearch.org. Charles' death certificate Parkersburg, WV list mother as Susan West b. in England. John T.served in the Civil War, married and settled in Allegany County, Md.
