George(of MA) &wife Mary (ofGA) late1800
Calling all SPOFFORDS of Mass.!!! I grew up in my grandparent's home hearing about a family member only referred to as "Grandma Spofford".This was a puzzlement to me when I began working on family history as the primary names are Barnes and Alston. Not a living soul could tell me who Grandma Spofford was! After nearly 6 months of investigative work, I have determined that the lady was my great grandfather Barnes' mother. A young war widow in Atlanta GA area when Sherman came through, she met a "yankee soldier" from Mass.and they were married some time later. Her maiden name was Mary A. Smith of Atlanta area, she had married Rowell Barnes in 1860. I've found mention of a formal wedding that took place between Mary A. Barnes and George S (or F) Spofford in Atlanta 1892(don't know why they waited so long to tie the knot). They are found also in 1910 census in Decatur, GA age approximately 68, George would have been born circa 1842. So far, I've had no luck tracing their footsteps after this date. Maybe they moved to or kept in touch with George's people in Mass. I am utterly compelled to know this mysterious woman more fully and am hopeful there may be some Spoffords out there who can help. Please e mail [email protected], karon
