I am researching my husband's family and have hit a brick wall. Wondering if anyone can help.
I have a death certificate for William Spitzhoff, Jr. dated Dec 17, 1908 NY. On it he lists his parents' names as William Spitzhoff (born in Germany) and Lena Spilker (also German).
William Jr (b 1858 in NY) shows up first in 1860 Census (Kings Co, NY). [Actually, this is probably William, Sr.] Second, he and his sister, Louisa (b 1861 in NY), show up in 1870 in Shrewsbury, NJ as wards of the Benjamin Parker family. Then Louisa disappears and William Jr. shows up in 1880 St. Louis, Missouri listed under the Henry Fischer family as their cousin. [Henry's wife is Marietta] Henry's mother-in-law is listed as Dorthea Spilker (b 1816 in Wurttemburg) on the same family list.
Further research shows Dorthea (Dora) in 1870 St. Louis as head of the family with two of her children. [James & Marietta both born in NY]
I also find a NY Passenger List from 1856 (Dep: Hamburg, Ger) that lists a Mr. Fischer right above a Charles Spilker and his family of 5. Coincidence?
Another strange bit of information I found was a NY City Lutheran church record listing a Friedrich Wilhelm Spitzhoff married on May 10, 1847 to a Maria Louise Spilker in Alzei, Hessen Darmstadt (Germany). This could be William Sr. & Lena.
Any help would be appreciated.
