The book, authored by J. Virgil Miller, BOTH SIDES OF THE OCEAN Amish-Mennonites From Switzerland To America Published 2002 by Masthof Press, 219 Mill Road, Morgantown, PA 19503, says "The Spycher family hails from Koniz, just south of the city of Bern in Canton Bern. An Ulrich Spycher married Anna Weibel in 1726. An earlier Ulrich from Koniz married Barbli Spaeni in 1602. We have no information on Speichers on their way out of Switzerland. If they came directly, the first named Ulrich could be the one on the Charming Nancy. It is more likely that the family spent several generations in Alsace or the Palatinate or Baden, but there is no evidence."
Ulrich owned adjoining land in Berks County and adjoining land in Switzerland to Valentin(e) Himmelsberger prior to emigrating to PA. According to the Himmelsberger web site @ http:www.geocities.com/robbinsrost/fowler/lifetimes/html Valentine Himmelsberger was born December 9, 1709 in the neck oh Baden-Wurttenburg in the South German Hills near the ruins of the Heidelberg Palace. He arrived in Philadelphia October 5, 1737 on the Bilander Townsend. Valentin(e) was a refugee from the Mannheim-Heidelberg area of Southwestern Germany.
I personally visited the farm & home which Ulrich Built in Penn Twp. of Berks Co.PA this past January. Any one wanting copies of the photographs I took as well as the Speicher Genealogy from Both Sides of the Ocean, email me and I will email them to you - the photos include Himmelaberger land.
