I purchased the subject undated studio portrait of an elderly woman taken by S. A. Thomas, 717 6th Ave., city and state not given. It is identified on the back of the mount in period handwriting:
"Cousin Mary Spencer
Westport N.Y."
The only likely candidate for the subject is a Mary Spencer listed in the 1860 and 1870 Census data for Moriah, Essex Co., NY; and the 1880 Census data for Westport, Essex Co., NY. She is also included in a Public Member Tree posted on ancestry.com.
Mary Spencer, maiden name Walker, was born about 1802 in VT. On 30 May 1822, she married a merchant, Jonathan B. Spencer, born 11 Nov 1795 in Panton, Addison Co., VT. The couple had five children--Semanthe (1823-1853, Almary (1825-1843), Charlotte (1827-?), Elizabeth (1837-?), and George B. (1840-?).
