We have more than one problem here which needs to be addressed before we get to Hannah. There are TWO Joel Blackwells who have been combined into ONE person for over 60+ years in both oral stories and printed books. The Rev. Joel Blackwell is not involved in this problem with Hannah as he was never married to Rebeccah Watkins.Although the tale has persisted for years that either one or both of these Joel's served in the RW, there are no records of service for either man to be found anywhere.I am getting ready to present to DAR the only statement that I know of where the grandson of my Joel stated that both of his grandfather's served in the War.He clearly stated that Joel was at the Battle of Cowpens just down the road from the home place. As for the Rev. Joel he may have his name on a DAR marker on the courthouse lawn in Henderson Co., NC but where is the proof of his service?
As if this is not enough of a problem the older Joel (mine) lived first on the land in Green River section that the younger Rev. Joel later lived on as well.It does make things confusing. The older Joel was born ca 1740 and left a Will in 1821 naming his issue as well as a lengthy lawsuit created by his children. He was married three times producing issue by the first two wives. The Rev. Joel was born ca 1755 and died ca 1738 according to church records. I only know that he had a brother named John who was also a preacher and is mentioned on deeds with him.His brother has also been confused with another John Blackwell.Lots of research needed in Rutherford Co. NC.
