My grandmother wrote that her g-g-grandfather was Jeremiah Spencer of RI who m. Alice Aldrich and fathered Mary Spencer who m. Reynolds Spencer. (Reynolds descended from Gerard in Stotfold, Bedford, Eng. thru Michael of MA, John, John, John and John Spencer/Susannah Reynolds.) Grandma said that Jeremiah's father was John Poyntz Spencer, m. to Mary Althorpe, and who came from England to first New Jersey, then New Amsterdam and finally to New England and that he was related to the House of Spencer from which the later Earls came, including the 5th Earl also named John Poyntz Spencer. (The Earl's mother was a Poyntz.)
However, when I search the web, I find no John Poyntz, but that Jeremiah's father was Peleg Spencer, m. to Eliz. Coggeshall, and also descended from the early Gerard thru Michael and John.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
