The Joseph Spencer who bought the property from Benjamin Vines was most likely the Joseph Spencer who later moved to Montgomery County, VA, and then to Lee County, VA, where he lived the rest of his life.In any event, descendants of Joseph Spencer of Lee County, VA, show a very close DNA relationship to descendants of William Spencer of Montgomery County, NC.The area where this Joseph bought the Vines land was very close to where William Spencer lived.Joseph also received a land grant in the same area. The John Spencer who was the witness has been thought to have been a brother of the William Spencer, but the descendants of the two men do not show a DNA match. There is a possibility of some sort of other connection between the two men, but nothing more is known about it.
There was another Joseph Spencer who lived in Montgomery County, NC, but he lived in a different area of the county and is thought to have been related to Judge Samuel Spencer, an entirely different family of Spencers.
