I wouldn't make such an assumption, myself--there may well still be a connection to your Ephraim Smith--especially if you have solid evidence of a man named "Nathan Spence" who married to a Smith in Loudon County, Virginia (prior to moving to Ohio). I am about to try to track down such a person--see if there really was a man named Nathan Spence who went to Ohio. I'll let you know when I find something.
