I'm collecting Speller/Alger data; my John was born abt 1830, appears in NJ wedding in 1856. Legend says his father's name was Alger, John used mother's name Speller when he "ran away to sea." Gave one son middle name Alger. My mother spoke of Hatfield as anceatral home, nothing more. Church records of Hatfield-Broad Oak missing 1815-1835, 1841 Census film not readable! Seamen's Ticket film for Speller part of alphabet not available! Frustrating!
