Because of the excellent research done by George Spear and documented in his book “Spear, Spier, Speer and Friends”, I have been able to determine that my GGG Grandfather was JOHN J SPEARS. He died in 1842 in Kershaw County SC leaving his wife ANNA (LNU) and three sons, JOHN H, DEMPSEY G and WILLIAM H. I have not, however, been able to find the ancestors of John J Spears.
There are at lest two schools of thought. One is that John is a descendent of James Edwin Spears and Lydia Meekins of Marlboro County SC. The other is that he is a descendant of James Speir/Spier and Elizabeth Coker of Edgecombe and Halifax Counties NC.
I tend to favor the NC connection because of the similarities of the family given names, however, nothing can be proven. If anyone has information, thoughts, ideas or suggestions that would link JOHN J SPEARS to either of theses families (or any other Spears family), I would sincerely appreciate any and all input.
