Hello,
Sorry to take so long to reply. Yes the Spike/Speight family seem to be huge and well spread around. I am not sure if our families are connected but it does seem likely. The 1881 census of County Durham, England shows my family:-
Living all together in one house in Whickham, County Durham.
Isaac Spike aged 65 born Maryport, County Cumberland
Mary Spikeaged 63 born Whickham, County Durham
William (son) "36""""
John(son) "18""""
Grace (daughter) 20""""
William Soulsby (Grandson) aged 6"
This William Soulsby Spike is my great grandfather but exactly which one (if any) of people is his parent or parents, is anyone's guess. It appears that a lot of people who share the name Spike/Speight originally came from the Cumberland area. Washington is roughly about 10 miles from Whickham so I would think that somewhere along the line the families must be related.
Sorry I can't be of more help but if you look on the IG Index you may find out more at www.familysearch.org
If you have anymore info or questions please contact me again.
Good luck
Regards
Joanne
