I am very interested in this family as well. My wife is in all likelihood a descendant of William Speight and Ann Phelps.
We have it back right now to a William Henry Speight born circa 1822 who married Margaret Wallace in Perquimans County, N.C. in 1840. My wife is descended from their son Wilson E. Speight. Wilson's son William Henry Speight married Martha Priscilla Boyce in 1900, and their son William Winford Speight (1911-1995) was her maternal grandfather who died in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on March 22, 1995.
The only Speight I find in that time period in Perquimans is Jeremiah Speight. Did Jeremiah have a son named William?
Chowan County records record the will of Josiah Speight on November 25, 1783, which mentions cousin Josiah Freeman (son of William Freeman, whom I assume is the William Freeman born 1696, died April 17, 1781 in Gates County, N.C., where many of the Speights lived), brother-in-law Everard Garrett who married Leah Speight in Chowan County January 30, 1758, David Welch, son-in-law James Roberts, brother William Speight's orphans (I'd love to find the children for this William Speight), cousin Charity Ellis, Ellender Spooner, brother JEREMIAH Speight and Nicholas Stallings Exrs. Test. Jacob Jordan.
Please keep in touch. Hopefully, we'll find something to tie these folks together. The Freemans were, by the way, from Norfolk, Virginia sons of a William Freeman born 1683 in Norfolk, died bef. August 1736 in Chowan County, N.C. His wife was Mary Cording, b. 1680 Norfolk.) Might be a clue in there to point to where our Speights originated, and how my wife's bunch are tied to them.
