A Deed of Sale fromJames Stanton To the Trustees of the Stantonsburg Academy
This Indenture made this 7th day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen between James Stanton Senr of the State of North Carolina and County of Edgecomb of the one part and Wiley J. Stanton,Blake Little,James D. Stanton of the county aforsaid and Henry J. G. Ruffin, Saml Vines, James Eastwood, Thomas Speight and Seth Speight of the county of Greene and all of the State aforsaid trustees in trust for the use and purposes hereinafter mentioned of the other part Witnesseth that I the said James Stanton Senr for and in consideration of the sum of five pounds to him in hand paid by the aforsaid trustees the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge himself fully satisfied hath by these presents given granted bargained and sold and conveyed unto the aforsaid trustees in trust for the uses and purposes hereinafter mentioned all and singular a certain lot or piece of land situate in the county aforsaid and adjoining the land whereon the Stantons or cross roads chappel is situated, containing by estimation two acres be the same more or less bounded as follows, to wit, beginning at a hickory in the dividing line between the said James Stanton and Wiley J. Stanton, his brother, near the southeast corner of Stantons meeting house and runs South 36 East eight pole to a red oak on the road leading from Snow Hill to Stantonsburg,thence with said road south 75 East 17 pole to a small red oak on said road, thence north 14 west 31 pole to a red oak on the road leading from Tarborough to Stantonsburg in the aforsaid dividing line thence with said dividing line South 38½ degrees west 25 pole to the beginning laid out for and containing two acres of land be the same more or less To have and to hold all and singular the above mentionedand described piece or lot of land Situate lying and being as aforesaid together with all and singular the houses woods waterways and privileges thereto belonging or in any wise appertaining unto them the said Wiley J. Stanton, Henry J. G. Ruffin, Thomas Speight, Samuel Vines, James Eastwood, Blake Little, James D. Stanton and Seth Speight and their successors in office in trust, provided that they shall erect, or cause to be erected, and built thereon, a house to be applyd as a seminary of learning known by the name of the Stantonsburg academy – but should the use cease, either by the trustees being necessitated to sell the house to pay the expences of building or by the house becoming out of repair by the timbers becoming defective and rotten, so as to render it unsafe and unfit for the reception of the school, and the trustees (or their sucessors in office) refusing to repair the house within the term of two years from the dismission ofthe school untill it becomes finally useless and the trustees having disposed of the house (as in all cases they shall have the right of so doing) then the right to revert back again as fully as this Transfer had not been made, and I the said James Stanton doth by these presents warrant and forever defend all and singular the before mentioned and described piece or lot of land with the appertainances there unto belonging for the use herein mentioned, unto the said Wiley J. Stanton, Henry J.G. Ruffin, Thomas Speight, Samuel Vines, James Eastwood, Blake Little, James D. Stanton, and Seth Speight and their successors in office chosen as the constitution of their Institution points out in case of vacancys from the claim or claims of him the said James Stanton his heirs or assigns and from the claim or claims of all persons whatsoever In testimony whereof I the said James Stanton have hereunto set my hand and Seal the day and year first written
