Son, Robert Emil--changed surname

Hello. One of my ancestors immigrated from Germany and chose the name Robert Emil Toerner (Torner), which surname was somehow representative of his mother. However, the family has said that his surname was actually some variation of Speidel before he immigrated. I am at a complete standstill on this line and would appreciate any information. I am told that his father's name was Rudolph and his mother, Henrietta.

Thank you!
