Found James and Martha Jane Wallace Speers/Spear shown as Speer on the University of Pittsburgh Digital Records website. Their children and some grandchildren were listed. James was a Ohio Riverboat Captain for 20years and probably lived in Speers and later New Kensington (Parnassus) PA. Later he went into the Brick Making business and was located at 6th Avenue in PIttsburgh. He fell off a lader and was fatally injured.
See the Pitt records for the names of his children. James was probably born about 1800 or earlier. He must have had several of these children when he was in his 50's. Perhaps he married late in life to a young wife. I will have to research the dates of his children's births. Several of their names tie in to ones I have been looking for. There have been several people saying they had one of their ancestors married to a Speers but I could not find any of the first names in the tree info I had at the time. As you can see the spelling of the last name has been the biggest challenge - 3 ways.
The writer in the Pitt article claims this was a Scotch Irish family when it clearly was German and French descent.
