Seeking parents of my gg-grandfather, Isaac Speer and of his wife, Valaria Collins, who moved to Chicago abt. 1839 from Newark, NJ with wife young sons, Edward and Charles W. Isaac Speer was b. in Fairfield, NJ abt. 1809 and he and Valaria (various spellings)Collins were married 1833 in Newark. Son Edward b. abt 1836, Charles W. b. in 1838. An Isaac Speer was listed in 1835/36 Newark city directory as watchmaker. My Isaac, and later his son Charles W., were watchmakers/jewelers in Chicago from as early as 1844 (city directory listing). He was said by family members to have been Jewish but could have also been from the Netherlands, and been part of the NJ Speers from the Passaic Co./Essex Co. area, just can't connect the dots. Can anyone out there help?
