I have a John Garret Speer (b. 12/21/1807) m. Hannah Roome Riker, that is a definite. I have Gerrit S. Spier as his father and Cathalyntje Post m. abt 1800 as his mother, but that is NOT a definite. They were married in Montclair. If you have anything more on the Garret connection, I would love to hear it! That name keeps popping up everywhere with the Spier/Speer surname.
