Isaac Speakman and his decendents
descended from Isaac Speakman and this is some information I have uncovered in the archives of the Family Records Office in Islington.
Isaac Speakman was born in Manchester in 1799 and married Jane who was born the same year, also in Manchester. At the time of the 1851 census they were living in Cheetham, Manchester with their 2 sons, Joseph (born 1829) and Joel (born 1830). Also a 15 year old servant called Hannah Bradbury. Isaac was a "Collector of Rents" and Joseph and Joel were both warehousemen in a straw bonnet factory. I don't know when Isaac and Jane died but they were both dead by the time of the 1881 census.
Joseph seems to have done rather better than Joel. In 1881 Joseph was married to Mary (born 1830) and they were living at "Wharton Lodge" in Eccles. They had 2 daughters, Christina (born 1864) and Elizabeth (born 1865) and also 2 servants. Joseph was a "Drapery Goods merchant". At the same time (1881) Joel was living in Cheetham, Manchester with his wife Elizabeth (born 1830), 7 children and no servants. Joel was a "Commercial Clerk" and his son Arthur (from whom most of us are descended) was then aged 16 and working as an Apprentice Machine Clerk.
