Hello Connie,

I can see no impediment to the idea that Ann Spann (b.1652) of Northumberland County, Virginia Colony was married first to John Read and second to Edward Bennett. However, neither can I present any conclusive proof.

John Read and Ann Spann Read were already married in 1671 when they sold her mother 200 acres of land. John Read was still living in 1672 when he registered his cattle brand.

The first daughter of Edward Bennett (also named Ann) was born 20 Sep 1676. Therefore your idea is certainly possible from a chronological standpoint.

The Spann family has its origin in Cheshire, England. There were also Bennett families living in that place. The parish registers contain records of an earlier Anne Spanne (b. abt. 1582) who married John Bennett of Neston Parish, East Cheshire. Descendants of both families could have easily come to Maryland and then Virginia.
