Richard Spann of Maryland (1620-1668)
Several persons have been asking me for information about the Spann family of Kent County, Maryland and Northumberland County, Virginia.What follows is a short summary:
Generation One
Richard Spann was born about 1620, probably in Cheshire, England.He
immigrated to the Maryland Colony about 1642 and settled on Kent Island.He
was the master of a ship which traveled on the Chesapeake Bay between Kent
Island, Maryland and Northumberland County, Virginia.About 1651 he removed
to Northumberland County, Virginia.Richard married first about 1651 to
Miss Hannah (Gribble?).They were the parents of one child, as follows:
1) Anne Spann - born about 1652, married John Read
Hannah Spann was living 1654, but dead by 1659.
Richard Spann married second to Graciana Watts about 1659.They were the
parents of at least 5 children, as follows:
2) Richard Spann - born about 1660, living 1671, dead before 1680, no issue
3) Cuthbert Spann - born about 1662, married Dorothy Sanford Morris, had
issue
4) Henry Spann - born about 1664, deceased before 1671, no issue
5) Samuel Spann - born about 1666, nothing further known
6) John Spann - born about 1668, married Sarah Downing, had issue
Richard Spann died in Northumberland County, Virginia during 1668.He left
a will.His widow, Graciana married second to a son of William Claiborne.

Generation Two
Cuthbert Spann was born about 1662 in Northumberland County, Virginia.He
was a son of Richard Spann and Graciana Watts.He was a member of the
Virginia House of Burgesses from Northumberland County in 1693.Cuthbert
married Mrs. Dorothy Sanford Morris about 1683.They were the parents of at
least 4 children, as follows:
1) Captain Richard Spann - born 15 Jun 1684, married and had issue
2) Rev. John Spann - born 26 Feb 1686
3) Elizabeth Spann - born about 1688, married Giles Webb and had issue
4) Samuel Spann - born about 1690
Cuthbert Spann was living 1699, but deceased by 1703.His widow Dorothy
died 1711.

Captain Richard Spann was born 15 Jun 1684 in Northumberland County,
Virginia.He was a son of Cuthbert Spann and Dorothy Morris.He married
and had the following known issue:
1) Frances Sinah Spann - married John Conway
2) Cuthbert Spann - born about 1710, married Agatha Conway
3) Benjamin Spann
4) Grace Spann
5) Elizabeth Spann - married Peter Conway
