Well, I am trying to help, but am afraid I am just creating more of a muddle. His tombstone means he was in the Spanish American War... but as you can see from what I am posting below, some other sources say WWI and give a different father's name than his obituary.
Since the Spanish American War was first, I imagine most of his service was actually in it and perhaps his father's name was John Samuel, hope these help.
DOSS, WWI Vet, Dies, Funeral Riles Incomplete
Nick J. Doss, 78 of White Oak, died at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Beckley Veteran's hospital where he was admitted Monday.
A resident of Raleigh county for over 60 years, he was born in Ronaoke Va., August 9, 1874, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Doss.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ethel Doss, three daughters, Mrs. W A Stump of Helen, Mrs. Virgie Jackson of Beckley, and Mrs. George Oliver of Ronoake, three sons, George of MacArthur, Roy of Beckley,
and Joseph of Detroit, Mich., a sister, Mrs. Ida Doss of Ronoake,
two brothers, Thomas of Ronoake, and Lewis of Danville, Va.,
17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
