Thanks, Denise. Maybe his birthplace is in fact Arkansas.

The 1930 census DOES show his birth place as Arkansas, but I've seen other records showing his birth in Georgia as well. I looked at the 1900 census you referenced and his birth differs by a year from the one listed on the WWI draft registration. I guess they just approximated his birth year (?)

I'd sure like to find an enlistment record, ship's log, etc from the time of the war in 1898. Do you know of any sources?
