The answer is in a posting before yours, Patrick McSherry "Researching a Spanish American War Vet" message # 585. He gives a couple of links on where to start your search. Have you ordered his death certificate as the ones in California ask about military service.
I find in a MN death index a Fred Hannah died Oct. 29, 1940 in Carlton County. A Magdeline Hannah d, April 30, 1947 in Carlton Co. could be fred's wife "Lena" of 1930 census. Good Luck
