Betty-
I had some extra time and thought that I would try to look up James Edward Freeman, b. 1872 Frankfort Kentucky. I found some information on Ancestry.com, that may be about your grandfather.I don't know what research you have done so far... this is what I found...may not be about your grandfather...but then again...it may.
1900 US Census: there is a James Edward Freeman listed at Ft. Brady Michigan- is the right age...and you mentioned that maybe he had been in Michigan.
1920 Census: James Edward Freeman- spouse Nance-lots of children, oldest is 14.Residing at Verne, Whitly, Kentucky: rentin, working of farmer, working on own account.
WW I draft 1917-18 registration:
James Edward Freeman b. 26 Oct 1872, residing in Whitney.
Lost leg, arm, hand, eye-not eligible for duty.
1898- was Spanish American Was.
188o Census: Lousiville, Kentucky: Mary Wright, age is 58. Living with her is a daughter Josepine Freeman, age 37, and two grandchildren, James Freeman, age 8 (b. 1872) and Mary R. Freeman age 6.
None of the information may be about your grandfather, but then again it may.
