I have no connection with the Middletons, just an avid interest in the Spanish American War period.

Have you requested his pension records from the National Archives?

Incidentally, if you know where he is buried, we could add his info. to the National Spanish American War Veterans' Gravestite Recording Project. for this project, see:

Also, once you complete your research, plese consider writing an article on your grandfather and the event surrounding his death for the Spanish American War Centennial Website. We always look for unrecorded events to add to the website.
