Boating Accident New York Harbor

This accident occurred in May of 1898. It involved the French liner LA TOURAINE and a small detachment of seven men working in a rowboat laying mines. The seven men, including Middleton, were thrown into the water as the liner ignored signals to avoid the area, and the vessel caught in the rowboat's anchor chain. Two of the men, including Middleton drowned.
