U. S. Army , 3rd Infantry
I am trying to research a great uncle who served in the Philippines in 1910. I realize this was after the Spanish American War, but perhaps someone can help me with an Army unit designation.
The person that I am researching was named Ernest R. Burt. The 1910 military census shows him as being enlisted in the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry, stationed at Pettit Barracks, Zamboanga, Philippine Islands. Years ago my grandmother gave me a piece of uniform "brass" he gave her when he returned. It is typical collar brass, with the crossed rifles of the infantry branch of service, with the numeral 3 and the letter I where the rifles cross. This would seem to confirm the census information, indicating he was a member of the 3rd U.S. Infantry. The problem is that I can find no record of the 3rd Infantry being organized at this time. It seems to have originated during World War 1.
I realize that during the Spanish American War, many units had state designations, but this doesn't seem to be the case on the 1910 census. There is no state referenced, only "U.S. Army, 3rd Infantry". Can anyone help me with this unit designation? I had thought that perhaps he was in the 31st Infantry, which has many references to service in the Philippines, but the census enumeration is very clearly 3rd Infantry.
In the 1930 census, he indicated that he served during the Philippine Insurrection. I sent to the National Archives for his service record and received a reply that no record of his service was found.
Any help with an explanation of his unit designation would be greatly appreciated.
Richard
