Spanish American War !!

Need help figuring out this Spanish American War. My Grand-Father was born 1872 and joined the Spanish American War. He was born in Frankfort, Kentucky, I have been told. I have heard many stories about this white fellow and cannot seem to find any information about him. I do know he ended up around Michigan, somewhere. It would be terrible to find out he was in fact a deserter of the army. Is there a way of finding this out? So worried and sad, but need the facts !!! Thank you so much in advance. His name was James Edward Freeman.
