All I can do for you is try to clarify the abbreviations:

PVT TRPMFM12REC CALVERY

PVT = Private

TRPM = Troop M

FM12REC = This is a bit confused. No idea about the "FM" The "12" probably refers to 12th Cavalry. There was no 12th Cavalry at the time of the Spanish American War. The "REC" is a bit confusing too. Since it appears to be a modifier on the type of Cavalry, this would indicate that the regiment is post-Spanish American War (when cavalry was simply cavalry)

CALVERY - Cavalry. Cavalry refers to men on horses (Calvery, or Calvary as it is more often misspelled, is a Biblical place name!)
