Average Age of Water Boy in war

I have some preliminary information that my great grandfather was a water boy in the Spanish American War. Although it sounds fairly self explanatory, does anyone know exactly what a water boy was? Was this a role fulfilled by a certain age group, or was there an average age? Would it be reasonable for somebody in their 20's to be a "water boy"? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
