2nd Regiment, U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, Troop "I"

Where do you start looking for information on volunteers for the U.S. Volunteer Cavalry. Samuel C. Elder joined 20 June, 1898 and was in Troop "I" of the 2nd Regiment of the U.S. Volunteer Cavalry. He was living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania at the time but he may have gone west to join up. He was discharged on 24 Oct. 1898 from Jacksonville, FL.
Thank you.--Ginny
