Soldier (?) BENEDICT in Span-Amer. SEARCHING!

I am trying to reconstruct my linage from my maternal grandmother's side of the family. There were stories when I was a kid that her father was a soldier in the Spanish American War. I have searched rosters, etc. all over the internet and cannot find that name anywhere. Does anyone have any information about a soldier with the surname BENEDICT? He finally settled in Kansas where my grandmother was born. Many thanks for any assistance or leads.
