USS Spangenberg

Kenneth Spangenberg was my uncle; his brother Robert was my father. I have been to several reunions of the crew of the DE 223 and I am preparing a DE 223 website using the articles, photos, and notebooks which were given to me by crew members. There is so much information to sift through. In answer to one of the questions: as far as we know, among the injured on the USS San Francisco during the night of November 12-13, 1942, were three men. One had lost an arm, another a leg, and the third had a gaping hole in his abdomen; all three had mortal injuries and stayed at their guns. Kenneth was one of these, but we do not know which. This information did not come to us until 1983 when my grandmother's scrapbook was found. Little information about military deaths was given to families during WWII. Some items from the ship are on display at the Naval Reserve Center in Lehigh Valley, PA (Allentown and Bethlehem area).
