I believe the ship to have been named for a Naval Aviator, Mark Spangenberg, who is honored with a plague on the wall of the Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola (Florida) (along with many other aviators). I have talked with someone whose father served aboard the ship, but they had no specific information, except that it saw service in the English Channel.
