To all those who are interested in the family ESPINOSA DE LOS MONTEROS,
I'm French (pls forgive my English mistakes) but I've discovered that I'm a descendant of the Espinosa de los Monteros in Spain. Indeed, as from the 15th Century, such Spanish families as the Espinosa de los Monteros, de Burgos, de Miranda, Santo Domingo ... used to trade with France (region of Nantes) and the Spanish Low Countries (Antwerp) and often settled down there as well.
My remote father's maternal ancestors include the
Despinose (de la Caillerie), being the French name of Espinosa de los Monteros.
Oddly enough and as their Spanish cousins did, some of the Despinose left Nantes and went to the New World and more precisely to the French Caribbean Islands (Martinique &
St Domingue = Haīti now). My ancestors are those who settled down in Martinique.
It would be very interesting to find out the links that tie both Spanish (& Latin American) and French families.
For your information, the most remote ancestor I found is Diego Fernandez Espinosa (seņor de los Monteros) born in 1441 & passed away in 1508. Several of his grandsons settled down in France.
Moreover, would somebody know if there's a link between the famous Jewish philosopher Baruch Spinoza and the Espinosa de los Monteros ?
