In order to give you some tips you would have to clarify what are you looking for.Is it information on the origins of which name"Carlista" or "Ruiz"?.If Carlista ,I venture to say that given the generation of your ancestor with that name his father and or mother must have been fervent"carlistas",possibly a military who fought in the Ejercito Carlista,or his father.Carlista is the political term used for those who in Spain were -and still ,though anachronically-followers of the claimant to the Spanish throneCarlos de Borbon ,who challenged the legality of Queen Isabel II(Queen Elizabeth II of Spain),after the death of her father Ferdinand VII.That was during mid-xix.A civil war broke out which divided the country for many years. The Carlistas held that no woman should inherit the throne,if there was a man to take over, even if he was not a son of the deceased monarch, but of royal line.I beleive in the case of Carlos de Borbon that he and Isabel II were first cousins. As to "RUIZ",that is not an unusual Spanish surname in its origin, though found in every country that has Spain's footsteps, the USA of course included. You may want to consult the "Diccionario Nobiliario" of Piferrer(8 or 9 volumes, including the coats of arms of every family name included that had one,Ruiz among them). It is a very reliable Spanish genealogy source, for origins of names ,which was published in Madrid in mid-xix. Try to get your ancestor's birth and baptismal certificates one by one going backwards ,as they would contain, specially those from the Spanish period of Mexico(Texas in it then),and you wou would hit one that will tell you from where in Spain that person ,or his parents and even granparents were from. That is uniquely a characteristic of Spanish registers.Well, good luck!!!
